First Responder Life Support (FRLS) Certificate Prepares FAST Students to Face Survival Challenges on Land and Water

Date: 21 December 2024

About the Program

Gunung Ledang Lagenda National Park, Johor, 21 December 2024 – A total of 18 students from the Bachelor of Science (Biodiversity and Conservation) with Honors program at the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology (FAST) have successfully obtained the First Responder Life Support (FRLS) Certificate, recognized by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM). The certificate recipients were trained to be capable of saving themselves and those around them in the event of any emergencies on land or in water. This is because various unexpected emergencies and accidents can occur in forests, highlands, rivers, and seas, which are essential skills for undergraduate students and later in the real working world.

The competency certificate is part of the syllabus for the mandatory course Outdoor Safety and First Aid (BWJ11201), which requires students to be proficient in both theory and practice regarding basic emergency assistance and safety. The 3-day, 2-night program consisted of 10 main modules and was conducted at several locations, including the EduHub Pagoh Aquatic Centre for the Water Rescue, Survival, and Analysis module. This was followed by simulation activities at Gunung Ledang Lagenda National Park, Johor, for modules such as fire ignition, rope tying, Wilderness First Aid, and Basic Life Support.

The students then underwent a competency assessment test, both written and practical, conducted by medical officers and paramedics from the Segamat Hospital Emergency and Trauma Medical Association. Notably, the course was also attended by 10 staff members from the Johor National Parks Corporation, including research officers, forest rangers, and forest enforcement officers, proving the program’s relevance to industries related to conservation and wildlife preservation.
